The state of women’s and adolescent girls’ health in developing countries is alarming. Over one billion of them suffer from undernutrition, including being underweight and having short stature, as well as deficiencies in vital micronutrients and anemia. These nutritional challenges have devastating consequences for their overall well-being and quality of life. Unfortunately, the global food crisis has only exacerbated the nutrition crisis for adolescent girls and women, with girls and women being disproportionately affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on livelihoods, income, and access to nutritious food.

The Impact of the Global Food Crisis

According to the UNICEF’s 2022 Flagship Child Nutrition Report, the gender gap in food insecurity has more than doubled between 2019 and 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the livelihoods, income, and access to nutritious food for girls and women worldwide. In Eastern and Southern Africa, for instance, up to four in five pregnant and breastfeeding women experienced food insecurity during the pandemic, with more than two-thirds reducing their consumption of foods from at least one food group. Shockingly, only a minority of adolescent girls and women in certain countries have diets meeting the minimum dietary diversity requirements, leading to severe nutritional deficiencies.

Failure in Nutrition Services and Social Protection

Nutrition services and social protection programs are failing to meet the specific needs of adolescent girls and women, especially in humanitarian settings where coverage and equity are lacking. For example, a substantial number of pregnant women do not receive essential iron and folic acid supplementation, which is crucial for preventing maternal anemia. Additionally, only a few low- and middle-income countries provide antenatal multiple micronutrient supplements, which are standard care in high-income countries. Humanitarian crises further exacerbate the difficulties faced in accessing nutrition services, leaving vulnerable adolescent girls and women without adequate support.

The Far-Reaching Consequences

Nutritional status is an essential indicator of overall well-being. Well-nourished girls and women have stronger immune systems, better mental health, and increased participation in family and public life. They also have improved prospects for earning a decent income and are better prepared for pregnancy, resulting in healthier outcomes for both mother and child. However, the cycle of poor nutrition can persist through generations, perpetuating inequalities and increasing the risk of long-term health complications. Undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and anemia not only hinder growth and development but also lower learning potential, work productivity, and wages for women.

Addressing the Crisis

To combat this global crisis, it is imperative that governments, organizations, and communities prioritize and invest in women’s and adolescent girls’ nutrition. Immediate action is needed to improve access to nutritious food, strengthen nutrition services, and enhance social protection programs. Efforts must be made to tailor interventions to the specific needs of women and girls, particularly in humanitarian settings. Furthermore, comprehensive education and awareness campaigns can help empower women to make informed choices about their nutrition and well-being. By prioritizing nutrition, promoting gender equity, and investing in comprehensive solutions, we can break the cycle of undernutrition and empower women and girls to lead healthier, more prosperous lives. Together, we can strive for a world where no woman or girl suffers the consequences of inadequate nutrition, and where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.

At Ashmi, we aim to empower every woman to have access to nutrition

At Ashmi, we have a bold vision for the future – a future where individuals have the power to take control of their own health and successfully reverse chronic conditions through sustainable solutions. We strive to create a world in which every person has equal access to proper diet and nutrition, tailored specifically to their unique needs. To achieve this, we believe in understanding what “proper diet and nutrition” truly means for each individual, taking into account their personal health goals, lifestyle choices, environmental factors, and individual body vitals.

In order to ensure that everyone has access to the proper nutrition they need, we recognize the importance of a data-driven approach. By harnessing the power of data, we can uncover and comprehend the individual differences in biological responses to various foods. We understand that the nutritional requirements of a woman in Ghana, who engages in manual labor for 12 hours a day, will vastly differ from those of a woman in the United States with a desk job. Our aim is to build a robust and comprehensive data-driven approach that encompasses women from diverse countries, ethnicities, and various stages of life.

Through our innovative research and analysis, we seek to uncover the intricacies of individual dietary needs and preferences. By examining data on various factors such as genetic predispositions, metabolic rates, cultural backgrounds, and lifestyle habits, we can gain a deeper understanding of how different individuals respond to specific foods. This knowledge will empower us to provide tailored nutrition recommendations that are both effective and sustainable.

We firmly believe that health and nutrition are not one-size-fits-all concepts, and that is why we are committed to including individuals from all walks of life. Our goal is to bridge the gap between nutritional research and practical application, ensuring that our findings are accessible and applicable to women of diverse backgrounds. By focusing on women, we aim to address the unique health challenges they face throughout their lives, recognizing the important roles they play in their families, communities, and societies.

To achieve our vision, we collaborate with researchers, healthcare professionals, and technology experts around the globe. By leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and personalized analytics, we are able to derive meaningful insights from the vast amount of data we collect. Through these collaborations, we strive to create a global network of knowledge, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

At Ashmi, we are not only dedicated to empowering individuals with knowledge but also to fostering a culture of inclusivity and equality. We firmly believe that access to proper nutrition should be a fundamental right for everyone, regardless of their geographical location, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. By working together, we can overcome the barriers that prevent many individuals from achieving optimal health and well-being.
